You're dead right. When we were in Bremen, we interviewed a bike shop owner there. He was very clear about the different markets for bikes, including in great detail what teenage girls want. Back here in Darlington, we've had very little interest in this project from the bike shops. It seems they can only respond to existing demand, rather than spot a need to develop new markets - never mind the political/environmental urgency.

Anyway, we decided to import a fleet of these dutch bikes for the Darlington girls (yes, all good lights with hub dynamos), and set up Velodarlo to make them more widely available to the people of the town.

The streets in Britain definitely need to be safer for cyclists of all ages. However, when it comes to cycling for teenagers, I often think one small thing is overlooked that could have a huge influence. Look at the pictures of the bikes that the girls are riding in Germany. You just can't get bikes like that in the shops in Britain. It's all mountain bikes and hybrids used for leisure riding. It's very hard to find a utility bike like the ones used by the girls in Germany and Amsterdam. They are so elegant and the upright position looks so stylish.

The girls ride them in their normal, day to day, fashionable clothes. They're not encouraged to wear helmets, day-glo jackets or other safety paraphenalia by pro-biking groups. From what I can see, all the bikes have decent lights which should be more than enough.

Our bike shops are selling the wrong bikes to the wrong people. I'm sure you could make a mint by selling these bikes in Britain and advertising them through the correct channels: Cosmopolitan; MTV etc.
